Cavadee in Mauritius
Today Mauritius celebrates Cavadee! This Hindu festival celebrated in the Mascarene Islands is a great religious Tamil festival known in particular for its rites in honor of the God Muruga.

This festival marks the end of 10 days of fasting and leaves room for various sacrifices by way of faith and devotion. The ceremony began with a pilgrimage to the temple to deposit multiple offerings but also to cleanse away evil spirits such as hatred, envy and all forms of temptation.

This festival is also known for its ritual walk on fire and body piercings with silver needles that the faithful endure to symbolize the power of good over evil.
