Sophie’s challenge: Kitesurfing from Mauritius to Reunion

Sophie Bernier, vice- world champion in freestyle kitesurfing in 2008, decided to make the crossing of 174 km between Mauritius and Reunion on her kite board . She will start in June.

33 year-old Sophie, the vice – world champion of freestyle kitesurfing in 2008, moved to Reunion 4 years ago. The idea of " défikite feminine " came to her when she met Sebastian Coupy, another kitesurfing enthusiast, who made the same crossing between the two islands in 2010.

The preparation is divided into three parts: kite training, the physical part, which started in June 2013 and the mental preparation that began in December 2013.

She will be accompanied by a support boat for the duration of the challenge in case of an emergency . The exact departure date has not yet been set. She will actually have to wait for the most favorable weather conditions to start her challenge . In order to complete the challenge, she requires the best conditions : wind strong enough for navigation and a current in the right direction. Météo France will provide her with the necessary information to select the most favourable window.
