For almost 10 years now, Mauritius has been one of the most sought after destination for lovers of the surf ski sport, and has now been selected for one of the 3 stages of the Surf Ski World Cup.
WHAT IS A SURF SKI ?
A surf ski is a long, narrow kayak, built for speed and for ripping through the waves and surf them. Equipped with a rudder and pedals in the front, surf skiers go down wind, using their double bladed, winged paddles to optimize their efficiency and speed, which can reach up to 25 km/h.
Its speed and maneuverability make it the vessel of choice for ocean life savers, but in recent years. the surf ski has become a very popular sport in coastal areas with a hot climate.
The Mauritian climate, ideal for surf skiers
As the main aim of a surf ski is to surf the waves, surf skiers need a precise and preferably constant weather forecast. Mauritius with its warm climate and predictable winds almost throughout the year offers ideal conditions for this up and coming water sport.
The region between Sanchot and Le Morne is particularly popular with the surf skiers as there are always waves, and the wind almost always allows for the required "down wind" approach. These consistent conditions made Mauritius the ideal destination for the "Mauritius Ocean Classic", which is part of the World Series since 2009, bringing the best surf skiers world wide to the island.

An entire week dedicated to surf ski
One of the most coveted spots for amateurs of the surf ski, Mauritius has dedicated a whole week of its sporting calendar to this discipline for almost 10 years now. The "Mauritius Surf Ski Week" will be held this year from the 1st to the 7th of July 2018.
The programme of the week consist of amateur surf ski sessions, conferences, possibilities to learn of perfect the sport under the watchful eye of the coaches and a variety of professional races.
One stage of the world cup will be held in mauritius during surf ski week.
Since 2016, the Mauritius Ocean Classic, climax of the surf ski week and 1 of the 3 races of the Surf Ski World Cup (ICF World Cup) will be held in Mauritian water, toward the end of the week.
The start will take place from Sanchot (Bel Ombre), in the South of the island, on the 7th of July at 10h00. The 24 km long stage will take the surf skiers all along the southern coast of Mauritius.
