Flying high in Mauritius

The immense turquoise lagoons around Mauritius with their warm water and the consistent wind conditions throughout the year make the island one of the best kite surfing destination worldwide. This board sport is becoming more and more popular: participants are getting pulled across the water by a kite while standing on a board. To change directions, the kiter has to control the kite and the board in relation to the wind,  similar to windsurfing.

wherever the sail takes you

The horizon is speckled with multi-coloured sails which seem to hover up to 15m high above the turquoise water. Kite surfing is an intense sport, full of exhilaration and a feeling of absolute freedom - abdominal workouts included.

Mauritius has become one of the famous kite surfing destinations in the world, and the colourful spectacle of dancing sails has become integral part of the coastal landscapes.

Timing & Spots

Kite surfing can be practiced throughout the year in Mauritius, depending on the regions, but the best period is between June and September, the season of the trade winds that blow consistently towards the equator.

Le Morne in the South-West of the island is the most famous and favourite spot for this sport, but there are plenty of other locations around the island, each and every one offering great conditions in a picturesque setting, such as Cap Malheureux, Anse la Raie, Butte à l’Herbe, Poste Lafayette, Blue Bay and Baie du Cap .

CELEBRations

Of course, Mauritius offers a kite festival every year, the Kiteival. Kite surfers of all levels, amateurs, professionals and champions, gather to visit the best spots of the island in several stages, for one week. The Kiteival is usually held in July where kiters from all over the world get together to compete, practice and enjoy - and it is a spectacle worth witnessing. This year, the Kiteival will start on July 22nd, 2018. Each stage offers several challenges: races, freestyle, waves, endurance and speed.

If you are passionate about this sport, we suggest to combine this festival  in Mauritius with the yearly kite festival of Rodrigues, which will be held in June. The Rodrigues festival unites local and international kite surfers for a long competition and a mini raid over several days.
